What is Color Guard?

The Vandegrift High School Color Guard is the “visual music” for the marching band show.  Also known as “the sport of the arts,” the expressive use of dance, flags, rifles, and sabers bring the music to life.

Who can join Color Guard? Are there tryouts? I’ve never done this before.Anyone can join Color Guard!  Everyone is on the same team and everyone works together toward a common goal— excellence! Clinics and workshops are held throughout the spring and summer to help new members learn the fundamental movements and equipment skills needed for the Color Guard activity. So give it a try! Does Color Guard take up a lot of time?Like all sports and extracurricular activities, time practicing is needed to excel. Once school starts we practice every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday after school.  As the season progresses, we will perform at numerous contests across the state. This is where our hard work will begin to pay off! I’ve heard a lot about summer band. What is it and do I have to attend?Summer Band takes place during the month of August and is mandatory for everyone, including guard members. During this time, you will learn most of the upcoming year’s show. It is a lot of work, but it is also where you really begin to start to feel that the band program is a family. So, where does the Vandegrift High School Color Guard perform? This is the best part of band! We travel all around the state of Texas and United States.  The band performs at all football games.  There are also numerous weekend trips across the state of Texas to perform at Regional and National Competitions.  The overnight trips are the best! You get to spend your time with your friends, have a lot of fun and perform in amazing stadiums.  It is an awesome experience! What is Winter Guard?

Winter Guard promotes education, creativity, and freedom of expression through the unification of pageantry and the performing arts. The performance combines flag, rifle, and saber manipulation, along with dance, colorful uniforms, and props to create exciting imagery. Dance skills, theater techniques, and equipment, along with physical strength and stamina give members a complete work out and a fun extracurricular activity.

The Vandegrift High School Winter Guard program is open to all students, boys and girls, from 9th-12th grades. This is a competitive performing group chosen by audition in late November, with an average group size of 20. The Winter Guard competes at a local level in the Texas Colorguard Circuit and nationally in Winter Guard International.  A pre-requisite for Winter Guard members is partcipating in the Marching Band. The combination of Marching Band and Winter Guard helps keep the members skills sharp all year round.

Winter Guard season runs from December through mid-April with rehearsals three times a week and approximately six weekend competitions.
